Lucy Moore & Lulah Ellender, Lives Told in Lists and Receipts

In the mid seventeenth century, Ann Fanshawe’s ‘receipt book’ was a response to the upheavals of civil war. These books were a feature of women’s lives during this period, and Lucy Moore follows her through this turbulent time as she leaves home, marries, bears – and buries – children and seeks to hold her family together. Lulah Ellender pre-sents what seem rather ordinary lists; shopping, packing for a foreign trip, the eggs laid by hens. But from these fragments we discover the extraordinary life of the grandmother she never knew. Elisabeth’s Lists were a source of structure and comfort and illustrate the familial threads that binds us, even beyond death.
