Susie Dent is a lexicographer and writer on language whose face is familiar to millions from her more than 2,000 appearances on Channel Four's perennially popular word-based game show Countdown. Between 2003 to 2007 she wrote a series of annual Language Reports for the OUP. Her most recent book, What Made The Crocodile Cry? 101 Questions about the English Language, appeared in 2009.
Rebecca Gowers is the author of two novels: Where to Walk and The Twisted Heart, the first of which was longlisted for the Orange Prize. Her great-grandfather was Sir Ernest Gowers, celebrated writer of style guides for written English.
