Senior's fresh, forceful writing breathes new life and relevance into the most destructive, dangerous era in English history. Totally grippingKate Saunders
The Times

This study of a family divided by the Civil War is powerfully engaging. Senior is equally convincing on the fast-moving, 'male' world of politics and war and the more pragmatic (but equally painful) battles fought by the women who must somehow live with the results. Hen is a delightful heroine; I was rooting for her right up to the novel's heartbreaking conclusion.Maria McCann, bestselling author of THE WILDING

Senior's prose is as fresh as a country walk in spring, and arrestingly original... This is a compelling book that truly gets under the skin of its characters, and does so with compassion and passion... I predict a glittering future for its hugely talented authorAngus Donald, bestselling author of THE OUTLAW CHRONICLES

In Somerled... Antonia Senior has created a perfect hero for our times... This is passionate, wonderful, windswept writing, full of the wonder of hill and heath and sea... One of the must-reads of the year.Manda Scott

Senior's prose is beautiful and powerful, poetic and yet immediate... She has taken a Norse-Gaelic legend and made it ring true, which is no small feat... Fearlessly and deftly done. I loved this book deeply.Giles Kristian

Antonia writes so beautifully, so convincingly... Her prose is exquisite - lyrical, sensitive, constantly and delightfully surprising. Her characters are utterly believable, rounded, engaging and absolutely of their time... Antonia has proved herself once again to be in the very first rank of British historical novelists.Angus Donald

This book by @Tonisenior is magnificent! One of the best books I've read in the last five years. Magical.Ben Kane

There are echoes of The Miniaturist in The Tyrant's Shadow... a gripping journey that twists and turns to the very final page. This is refined historical fiction at its very best.
Elizabeth Fremantle

An extraordinarily good historical novel by an author at the top of her game... If there's any justice in the world, it should be a bestseller.
Andrew Taylor

Fresh and fearless historical fiction set in a fascinating era. And featuring top swearing. Loved it.
Anna Mazzola

A satisfying tale of romance, politics and old-fashioned adventure.
