Sustainability
At Atlantic, we recognise the grave threat posed by climate change. As a trade publisher, we are aware that our actions can have an impact on earth’s resources and biodiversity. We believe it is our responsibility to conduct our business in an environmentally sustainable way and to continuously find ways to minimise our impact.
Here’s a summary of the actions we have taken so far:
SUPPLY CHAIN
- Atlantic books are printed on FSC-certified* materials.
- In 2023, 100% of books were produced locally in the UK, thus eliminating emissions connected with international freight.
- Six-month print policy for most titles to reduce overstock and pulping.
- Our main printer CPI purchase 100% certified renewable energy.
- Office copies from CPI received in re-usable crates rather than cartons.
*FSC certification confirms that the forest is being managed in a way that preserves biological diversity and benefits the lives of local people and workers, while ensuring it sustains economic viability.
IN-HOUSE PRACTICES
- Currently in the process of measuring our Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions* for 2023, which we will use as a benchmark to reduce our carbon emissions in future years.
- Reducing the number of Marketing proofs and office copies.
- Limiting amount of plastic in our marketing materials.
- Message on Marketing proofs advising on how best to dispose of them.
- Excess copies donated to charity at Royal Trinity Hospice.
- Limiting flights for business trips and using trains whenever possible.
- Cycle-scheme available to all employees.
*Scope 1 – emission from sources that are owned or controlled by the company.
Scope 2 – emissions from the use of purchased energy.
Scope 3 – emissions that occur across the value chain.
